Which are most commonly compressed, raster data or vector data? We compress data so that files are easier to transfer. Raster data is most commonly compressed due to its large size and required storage space. How does an ellipse differ from a sphere?

GIS are critical for effective resource management, and have been applied across a wide range of science, business, and government endeavors This book provides an introduction to the theory and application of GIS. This fourth edition balances theoretical and applied material, so that students may apply knowledge of GIS in the solution of real-world problems.
Topics treated include an introduction to GIS, spatial data models, map projections, data entry, image data, GPS, digital data, database systems in GIS, general spatial analysis, raster analysis, terrain modeling, metadata, standards, and accuracy assessments. While this is not a textbook those who do not need complete, comprehensive understanding of geospatial science, it is the text book of choice for those who do.
We teach the U. The Bolstad text provides thorough discussion of the principles and practice of GIS for which we apply the same text to three GIS courses.
Text content is well organized including GIS components, data models, coordinate systems, data entry and editing, GNSS, satellite and aerial imagery, geospatial data resources and spatial data formats, attributes and tables, spatial analysis, spatial statistics, spatial data modeling and data standards and quality. This text book is well suited to instructors who want to convey professional geospatial understanding to their students.
Paull on Jun 07, This book can be long and dry, but that is many of the facts about the study of GIS. Good detail on the concepts, but the glossary is dissimilar to most textbooks as some italicized words are not found. Good for those looking to start in this field. By Anonymous on Aug 10, Excellent and clear manual of mapping through software.
Paul Bolstad is a good author and his instructional videos online are good resources too. Loves the book. Good deal on price as well! A must for GIS users. He would give the book five stars however the prices here are horrible. You can buy the same book at [ Answers to selected study questions. Supplemental links Total pages are I hope that this helps. Anderson on Sep 30, This book was used as the main textbook for two of my graduate-level introductory GIS courses. I enjoyed reading even the most technical portions and the study problems are quite good.
He really explains everything conceptually so the information sticks, and activities provided with this book are so informative. I learned more from this book and its attached activities than from anywhere else.
This is a great book, and I think all colleges with GIS should teach at least one class from this book. It has a lot of pictures, graphs, and other ways for illustrating each chapter. It also affordable and arrived before it was expected. Very much enjoyed the book style. For a textbook this was super-affordable. Unlike some others who posted here, the choice of typeface in the graphics and captions does not bother me. Glad I picked up this text.
Unprofessional and not a college-level textbook By Kenneth Payne on Sep 21, The information in this book is ok and it covers a lot, but the quality and effort put into the book is complete crap. It is very unprofessional and you should expect more out of a college level textbook. I received this book in excellent condition. The description on the product matched what By Exstaticxangel on Mar 22, I received this book in excellent condition.
The description on the product matched what I received. I have nothing bad to say about this product! The knowledge from this book is what you need to understand to be successful with any GIS program. By Amazon Customer on Dec 07, A necessary purchase for grad school.
Has all the fundamentals of GIS! The writing is very dense. The author will go over simple concepts in excruciating detail meanwhile glossing over more complicated material. I suppose it was written in this way to build a good foundation with the basics while touching upon more advanced concepts. In regards, to completing assignments though, I find myself going on the internet to clarify confusing concepts rather than using the book and often times I find contradictory information.
The figures in the book would be helpful if they had a bit more explanation in the narrative. This book also suffers from poor editing. There are many typos and the index might as well not exist. Instead of drudging through the dense material looking for a particular concept, I usually just turn onto the internet because the index is not helpful at all. However, if you already have some background in programming this book may serve as a good reference.
Otherwise, I would pass this text up. This particular edition is in a Paperback format. It was published by XanEdu Publishing Inc and has a total of pages in the book. To buy this book at the lowest price, Click Here. Similar Books.

GIS Fundamentals 5th Edition Paul Bolstad Perhaps the most useful are the book figures, made available in presentation-friendly formats. Most of the figures used in the book are organized by chapter, and may be downloaded and easily incorporated into common slide presentation packages. A few graphics are not present because I do not hold copyright, or could not obtain permission to distribute them. Sample chapters are available for download, although figure detail has been downsampled to reduce file sizes.
