The chapters on optical interconnects and switches and optical fiber communications have been completely rewritten to accommodate current technology. Each chapter contains summaries, highlighted equations, exercises, problems, and selected reading lists. Examples of real systems are included to emphasize the concepts governing applications of current interest. It consists of chapter-length or longer treatments of topics that warrant their own textbooks and graduate classes, but they always contain the most essential information, clearly explained.

I have the 1st edition, but it looks like I will now have to order the 2nd edition too. This book is just completely indispensable for students and professionals in the field.

Trivia: Fundamentals of Photonics makes a cameo appearance in "Spiderman 2" during a sequence when Peter Parker is hitting the books. Brown on Jul 10, If you could only have one general photonics book - this is the one to have.

All you need is a basic understanding of calculus and physics electricity and magnetism. The book is well-written and full of good example problems. The graphics are very clear and laid-out well. To put things into perspective, there is also some coverage of the historical aspects of the field. I love this book and highly recommend it! Pros: -It is clear. This is a big deal. Equations are explained; concepts are elucidated, and the variables are clearly defined. Color pictures are useful, although perhaps not strictly necessary.

As my librarian said, "That looks big enough to kill somebody with"--it is a huge book although a bit annoying to carry around. It covers all the topics you would want, and does a very good job. It addresses the topics you would want to find in a modern book. There are few, if any, typos in the book. Cons: -Cost. It is expensive, no getting around that. The few examples that it has are worked out well, and hopefully your professor will guide you through the problems.

In short, I highly recommend this book! The authors managed to make it suitable both for a class and for teaching it to yourself, without being too verbose. Best text on photonics. But the good thing is that the references and journal publications are listed at the end of each chapter. The book covers a very broad range of material, however, there is a shortage of examples and most of the problems are geared towards proving concepts rather than demonstrating applications. By Chris on Dec 03, As everyone has mentioned the book is a great reference book but absolutely terrible as a textbook especially for an introductory course into photonics.

The number of students who learn by a pure theory method for instruction is next to none. Unfortunately trying to get the solution manual that accompanies the book is next to impossible whether from legitimate or illegitimate means. As my instructor does not give problems from the book using the solutions manual as a reference would be ideal.

That being said whether the price is worth it for a supplemental source is debatable. Wojtczuk on Apr 05, This book is well-illustrated and has very readable, qualitative, and often quantitative descriptions of many topics. It does not go into great detail on many of the advanced or newer topics it mentions. This is an introductory book. Many people learn a topic best by first reading a semi-quantitative account, and then going on to higher-level detailed graduate level books or papers if they find the effort on that topic is warranted.

For example, if one see "whispering gallery mode" in some article, and wants to know more, one can find a nice figure and a brief qualitative description in this book. Now, the description in the book is not enough to design anything, but it is adequate for a reader to have some understanding and decide if he or she needs or wants to know more about this topic.

Similar comments can be made about APDs using thin multiplication regions to lower noise, or the use of strain in semiconductor lasers to improve performance, etc.

I think this book is very useful as an undergraduate text or as the first but not final book you will want to consult when studying a new topic. Throughout its 24 chapters you will find information about the foundations of the field wave, beam, and Fourier optics, polarization, etc.

Each chapter ends with a long list of references comprising both books and articles as well as several problems. Historical issues are also included. There are plenty of excellent figures, many of which colored. What can you ask more? Be careful!!! By Michael S. The binding is completely off, very cheap!! However the one my friend purchased is holding up fine, so be sure to ask the supplier where the book was printed before purchasing!! Now for the content: The book is definitely a reference. Overall, this book would be great to keep on your desk for a quick reference or to refresh your memory, but I would not recommend this to learn from.

One of the Essential Books of Optics to Own By Mark on Jul 24, If you are in the field of optics or biomedical optics, there are three to four books which would be the most essential to own. The is one of them. This book is comprehensive, dealing with all the most critical areas in field, yet easy to read. It is either outstanding in understanding the most basic concepts, yet a phenomenal reference on the derivations of relationships whose origin is left to the imagination in most textbooks.

This is a must buy. I have been studying this photonics book for a while now. It presents material in a very conceptual way. I appreciate its simplicity.
